Migration and Identity. Historical, Cultural and Linguistic Dimensions of Mobility in the Balkans
Mobility and cross-border migrations on the Balkans are some of the modern areas of study in social science that became priority items on the agenda of public debate over the past few years in view of the European Union’s enlargement. However, we know from history that this type of mobility is not new in Balkan countries: the tradition of temporary labour migrations has existed for centuries in a number of regions on the Balkans1. For centuries, men living in the mountain regions of the peninsula would head towards the lowlands in order to provide means of existence to their families which stayed back at the home villages. What’s more, in a historical context, labour migrations on the Balkans were as a rule cross- and trans-border, “border” in the meaning implied by Fredrik Barth of the (trans-) ethnic, religious, cultural, and, later, state boundaries on the Balkans.
